Trinity College Bursaries & Grants
Academic Grants Available to all undergraduates to help with costs related to academic work; things like books, materials, or project expenses. You can receive up to £800 in total across your entire degree. Applications open each term in 2nd week, with a 4th week deadline, and are submitted via a form on the College intranet.
Mitchell Fund Grants Aimed at undergraduate science students in their penultimate year who hold an Exhibition or Scholarship and are doing a summer placement that directly benefits their degree (such as lab work or a relevant industrial placement). Awards are normally up to £500. If funds allow, it can also be extended to Modern Languages Exhibitioners for their year abroad, or Exhibitioners and Scholars in other subjects for a summer project tied to their degree (e.g. dissertation research). Applications are called in 2nd week of Hilary and Trinity terms, with a 4th week deadline.
Language Centre Course Grants There are two tiers here. If a language course at Oxford's Language Teaching Centre directly relates to your academic studies, your subject tutor can recommend it and the College will pay the full course fees (you just email the Academic Administrator). If the course isn't directly related to your degree, you can apply to the Grants Committee for a grant covering half the fees, provided it falls within your £800 Academic Grant allowance. Separately, international undergraduates for whom English is a second language can have their Academic English course registration fee covered automatically as the Language Centre invoices Trinity directly, though you'd still need to apply for help with the main course fee.
Lingen Fund Specifically for Classics students who want to travel abroad to conduct research. The maximum award is normally £500. Students interested in applying should speak directly with the Fellow and Tutor in Classics, Dr Gail Trimble.
Modern Languages Year Abroad Fund For students studying two modern languages who need help covering expenses related to their second language during their year abroad. Students should discuss eligibility and applications with Professor Katherine Ibbett or Dr Maria Blanco.
Levine Bursaries These are the most substantial need-based awards Trinity offers. If you're a UK undergraduate who either doesn't qualify for an Oxford Bursary or whose Oxford Bursary doesn't fully cover your financial needs, you can apply for a Levine Bursary when you're admitted to Trinity. A number of these are awarded each year to incoming students and are held for the full length of your degree, as long as you maintain satisfactory academic progress and your financial circumstances don't change significantly. They are funded by Peter Levine and an anonymous former Trinity student. For details, contact the College Accountant at nasera.cummings@trinity.ox.ac.uk.
University of Oxford Bursaries & Grants
Crankstart Scholarship One of Oxford's most generous undergraduate support schemes. Available to UK-resident students studying for their first undergraduate degree whose annual household income is £32,500 or less. It provides a non-repayable bursary of up to £6,270 per year, but importantly it goes beyond just financial support. Crankstart Scholars also get access to funded internships to build employability skills, volunteering opportunities, and community events. There's no separate application; eligibility is determined automatically through the standard UK student finance household income assessment you do prior to getting any student finance.
Oxford Bursary A non-repayable annual bursary for UK students (or Republic of Ireland nationals living in the UK or Ireland) studying for their first undergraduate degree from lower-income households, who are not taking up a Crankstart Scholarship. It's also available to eligible Graduate Entry Medicine students and some PGCE students. The amount you receive scales with your household income:
£25,000 or less → £4,320/year
£25,001–£32,500 → £3,790/year
£32,501–£37,500 → £3,240/year
£37,501–£42,875 → £2,160/year
£42,876–£50,000 → £1,080/year
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may also qualify if they meet UK residence requirements. Again, no separate application is needed, it flows from your student finance assessment, which must be completed by 30 May 2027 for the next academic year.
Oxford Travel Supplement An automatic top-up for Crankstart Scholars and Oxford Bursary holders who live more than 80 miles from Oxford. If you live between 80 and 150 miles away, you receive £220 per year; if you live more than 150 miles away, you receive £550 per year. Distance is measured in a straight line ("as the crow flies"). You don't need to apply, you're notified shortly after your bursary is confirmed.
Care Experienced & Estranged Student Bursary For UK students who have ever been in care, or who are studying without the emotional or financial support of their family. You can receive up to £3,500 per year for every year of your course, including help with vacation costs. To be eligible you must have already taken out the full government support available to you (unless there's a good reason you haven't), and you apply separately for this award.
Student Support Bursary A supplementary, non-repayable fund available to UK/home students once they've started their course and find themselves facing a financial shortfall or unexpected exceptional costs. It's designed as a safety net for situations that other bursaries and grants don't cover, and is applied for as the need arises.
